Landscape Architecture was hired to design a large
backyard at the bottom of a steep slope along the
shores of Lake Sammamish. The owner is a young
family with two children that desperately
needed more usable play space while taking advantage
of the sprawling lakefront and views.
The long
sloping yard was graded into three level terraces by
small retaining walls. The
first level area adjacent to the rock
beach at the lake features a patio space that will
accommodate a future beach cabana, and a large
sweeping lawn. The second
terrace features a colored concrete sport court,
oriented to take advantage of the long views across
Lake Sammamish to the southeast. The third
terrace is a seating and viewing area for the sport court. An
existing foundation wall has been dressed up with
Chilton rustic stone and capped with a large cedar
arbor to create shelter for the patio. The slope
leading down from the house is planted with native
plantings to help reduce erosion, and native plants
continue into the terrace plantings, where they are
accompanied by lush perennials and shrubs with year
round color and interest.
