The Aspen
residence is a new construction home located near Tulalip,
Washington. Studio 342 Landscape Architecture was
hired to help the owners create a lush landscape
with a northwest garden feel and seasonal color
along with outdoor spaces for dining, entertainment,
and recreation. The entry path,
colorful Full Moon and Lace Leaf Japanese maples, as
well as northwest perennials, and evergreen shrubs
to define beds and screen neighbors to the north and
south. An existing drainage ditch was lined with
large granite boulders planted with wetland and
water loving plants to create a northwest riparian
style garden along the front of the property. The side yard
extending around to the back has a crushed rock path
that meanders through groves of bright red Sangu
Kaku maples and Katsura trees. The path wraps
around the back of the house to a large scored
concrete patio bounded by a seat wall with large
granite boulders set into it. An expansive lawn winds between the patios,
around the seat wall tying into the to the upper
lawn area and around to the front, for lots of open
active space. A recirculating water feature
creates background noise for the patios and is fed
by rainwater collected from the roof.
